This is an AJ8 8″ horizontal milling machine manufactured by the Ajax Machine Tool Co Ltd of Halifax, serial number 8751.
The dimensions of the table are approx 16″ long x 4 1/2″ wide, with two 3/8″ T-slots and the spindle accepts 1″ bore cutters.
It is powered by a 240V single phase motor, with a standard 3 pin socket fitted to allow the machine to be turned on / off at the socket. The in-built switch has been disconnected from use, it might be better to fit a modern NVR switch if a switch local to the machine is required when it is commissioned in your workshop.
Drive from the motor to the spindle is via two belts and an intermediate two step pulley. As there isn’t a belt tension system for the secondary drive to the spindle, and the adjustment for the primary drive from the motor is hidden away within the base, if the ability to run with different spindle speeds is required, it might be simplest just to buy different length belts and then to swap the belts over to achieve different running speeds.
The machine weighs in at a hefty 225 kg, so once fitted to your workshop it is unlikely to move anywhere whilst in operation.
