Sorry, now sold
This is a Boxford VM30 vertical milling machine, with the infinitely variable spindle speed mechanism similar to that also found on Raglan milling machines.
According to the specification in the guide for this machine, the table size is 550mm x 150mm. The head swivels +/- 45 degrees. The spindle accepts INT30 tooling, and there is a Clarkson collet chuck and collets plus a selection of INT30 mill holders. The original drawbar and peg spanner are also present. The hand wheel measurement graduations are metric.
Variable speed operation is controlled via the dial on the front of the machine, note that the calibration of actual spindle speeds against those shown on the dial has not been checked. The fast / slow speed ranges are selected via the control plunger on the top of the head.
The machine is operated from a single phase 240V supply, having recently been fitted with a new 0.75kw 4 pole motor. Note that the fan cowl to the motor fowls the access door behind which the electro-mechanical controls are mounted, so when inspecting this machine I found that to access these controls the head needs to rotated counter clockwise (when looking at the rear of the machine), which allows space to lift the door off its hinge, opened past the motor, and then placed back on the hinge.
There are two additional kick operated cut off switches, once at the front of the base and one to the right hand side of the base.
The original coolant pump, tank and pipework are present, but these are untested. They would require a suitable 440v 3 phase supply, probably easier to source a single phase pump if you wanted to use the existing tank, pipes etc.
There are two lifting eyes either side of the column to assist with lifting the machine with a suitable lifting crane, straps and load spreader.
Also with original brochure and instruction manual as sourced from lathes.co.uk. Further information about this type of machine can be found on the lathes.co.uk website.
